Expandable graphite crystal is a typical layered carbon material. Other heterogeneous particles such as atoms, molecules, ions, and even atomic clusters are inserted into the interlayer of crystalline graphite by physical or chemical methods to form a new layered compound, which is called graphite interlayer compound, namely expandable graphite.

The expanded graphite obtained by high-temperature expansion has a rich pore structure, so it has excellent adsorption performance. Most environmental protection materials use the adsorption of pollutants to achieve the purpose of pollution control. Therefore, expanded graphite, a porous structural material, can be used as an adsorption material factory to develop and close the pores, and the pore volume accounts for about 98%.

Different from the materials with pore structure, it is a porous material with a medium pore structure. Therefore, its adsorption characteristics are also different from those of activated carbon, and its adsorption performance in the gas phase is far lower than that of activated carbon; But the liquid phase adsorption is much larger than that of activated carbon. The macroporous structure is conducive to the adsorption of organic and bioengineering macromolecules. Due to the nonpolarity of the graphite surface, oil is lipophilic and hydrophobic in liquid phase adsorption, and oil products are preferentially adsorbed. The experimental results show that LG expanded graphite can adsorb more than 80g of heavy oil. Therefore, it is a promising environmental protection material for removing oil pollution on the water surface. In 1997, Japan’s Fukuoka offshore tanker leaked and tried to remove it with expanded graphite, which achieved good results. Because of its lipophilic and hydrophobic characteristics, it is also very effective to remove trace oil pollution in water.

In the wastewater treatment of chemical enterprises, environmental protection engineering often uses a variety of methods and materials. For the commonly used microbial (bacterial) treatment, expanded graphite is a good microbial carrier. Therefore, expanded graphite has a good application prospect in chemical water treatment, especially in the water treatment polluted by oil organic macromolecules. Due to its chemical stability, it is relatively easy to regenerate and reuse after pollution treatment.

Due to the adsorption properties of expanded graphite, it also has a wide range of applications in biomedical materials. Tsinghua University and others have developed expanded graphite to make medical dressing instead of gauze. Through the animal experiments of more than 300 mice, rats, guinea pigs, and military strength rabbits, it has been proved that it is non-toxic, has no side effects, has no stimulation to the wound, does not stain black, and promotes healing.  It has obvious anti-infection, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects, and can replace 50 ~ 80% of the gauze.
